Preparing Omani Pre-service Teachers for Online Teaching: Design, Development and Evaluation of a Professional Development Course

Abstract

This study addresses the current need for professional development programs to prepare Omani pre-service teachers to design online courses. Through a TPACK framework and a mixed-methods approach, we designed, implemented, and evaluated a professional development program intended to enhance both the pedagogical and technological competencies for online teaching. The program consisted of four modules on the foundation of online pedagogy, syllabus design, content development, and course management, contextualized to meet Omani educational needs. Data from 60 pre-service teachers via surveys, and reflections showed that there was a significant development in their confidence and skills regarding online course design. Findings reveal that high-quality course content, engagement, and effective organization are crucial for successful online teaching. This research identifies the need to develop necessary digital skills among future teachers and informs future professional development initiatives through a recommended empirical framework. The study identifies the development of online teaching competencies within teacher education programs as a strategic response to the evolving landscape of higher education in Oman.
