Designing Minecraft-Supported Project Learning for Meaningful Elementary Mathematics Experiences
Abstract
Despite the increasing integration of digital technologies in elementary education, meaningful models for mathematics learning remain limited. Persistent dependence on procedural, teacher-centered instruction often inhibits students’ conceptual understanding and engagement, despite a generation shift toward interactive and technology-enabled learning environments. The purpose of this study was to propose a context-sensitive Minecraft-supported Project-Based Learning (PjBL) framework using the knowledge gained from projects about the learning experiences of mathematics education in elementary schools. Employing an exploratory design study approach, the research synthesizes data from student questionnaires, teacher questionnaires, and classroom observations to identify conceptual difficulties, learning preferences, pedagogical capacities, and contextual constraints. The findings reveal a clear misalignment between students’ needs and prevailing instructional practices, as well as limited structured integration of digital media. In response, the study translates empirical classroom evidence into explicit design principles and an instructional storyboard that systematically aligns conceptual goals, collaborative activities, and digital affordances. The study concludes that effective integration of Minecraft-supported PJBL depends not merely on technological adoption but on transparent, contextually grounded instructional design. The implications highlight the importance of evidence-informed design processes to bridge educational technology research and everyday classroom practice in elementary mathematics.
